Avalanche Closes Highway to Seward

An avalanche has closed one of the state’s major highways. The Department of Transportation says the Seward Highway was closed in both directions Friday afternoon because of an avalanche at mile marker 21 of the Seward Highway. The avalanche occurred south of Crown Point and north of the Snow River Crossing, near the mouth of Kenai Lake.

Spokesman Roger Wetherell says no injuries were reported.

Wetherell says crews are setting up electronic message boards to alert travelers of the problem. He says the highway will remain closed overnight. Wetherell says heavy equipment will be brought to the area on Saturday to remove the snow.
