Homeowners Suffering Loss From Erosion to Receive Assistance

Ellen Lockyer, KSKA – Anchorage

The Matanuska Susitna Borough Assembly has approved a plan to assist riverside property owners who have suffered loss due to erosion along the Matanuska River.

The plan forms a team including the Ctiy of Palmer, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state Fish and Game and the Alaska Department of Transportation, among others.

It calls for agencies and property stakeholders to work together on land management issues.  Previously, different agencies did separate studies on river erosion.

Assembly member Lynn Woods is the Borough’s deputy mayor.

The plan provides $100,000 for improving erosion management, including public education, riverbank structures and in some cases, moving homeowners.
