Former Young Aid Due For Sentencing This Month

Steve Heimel, APRN – Anchorage

Mark Zachares is due for sentencing Nov. 22.  He was an aide to Representative Don Young who got mixed up in the corruption surrounding lobbyist Jack Abramoff and pled guilty to charges of fraud in exchange for co-operating with prosecutors.  Zachares was never called upon to testify.  In court filings he asks for a suspended sentence.  Prosecutors at one time wanted two years imprisonment.  Zachares was instrumental in getting special favors for sweatshops in the Marianas Islands.
