Animal Care Offers Tips For Helping Pets Cope With Fireworks

For the first time in years, residents of Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley can legally shoot fireworks. However, as much as the new law may please Houston firework vendors and their eager customers, Anchorage’s Animal Care and Control Center says pet owners should take special steps to reduce the stress on their animals.

Dr. Myra Wilson expects there’ll be a lot of stressed and frightened animals from 9:30 pm on December 31st to 1 am on January 1st in Anchorage and from 6 pm to 1 am in the Mat-Su Valley. That’s when resident are allowed to greet the new year with their personal fireworks.

Wilson heads Anchorage’s Animal Care and Control Center. She summarized some of the advice the center issued to help pet owners during the noisy hours of New Year’s Eve and early morning.
