In McGrath, amid the outdoor preparations, Chef Todd Bulock was hard at work cooking food for the incoming mushers and race staff. The centerpiece of Tuesday’s meal was Iron Springs Cafe’s Famous Gumbo, which he took a few minutes talking about.

Though the race leaders checked out of the McGrath checkpoint just as soon as they checked in, the kitchen was packed with race officials and volunteers clamoring to get a bowl of gumbo.
