Man Rescued After Falling into Glacier Crevasse

Len Anderson, KSKA – Anchorage

Saturday evening State Troopers using a helicopter, and members of the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group, successfully extracted an Eagle River man who had fallen into a crevasse on the Nelchina Glacier.

David Joerg, 54, was snowmachining on the west side of the glacier with another rider when he fell into a crevasse. His companion contacted the troopers from the Eureka Lodge at 2:30 pm. Six hours later Joerg was rescued.

He had fallen about 60 feet and was wedged in the ice. Joerg was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
