Troopers Name Officer In Deadly Shooting

Alaska State Troopers on Monday identified the officer involved in a fatal shooting last week.

In a web posting, troopers said Sgt. Paul Anthony “Tony” Wegrzyn shot and killed Justin Lloyd Abrahamson on Friday after Abrahamson advanced on troopers with a raised bat.

He was shot about 4:20 a.m. near the Thunderbird Falls exit of the highway that connects Anchorage to Wasilla, a city about 40 miles to the north.

Troopers say Wegrzyn is a nine-year veteran of the troopers, and is assigned to the Palmer post.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation will investigate the shooting, and forward results to the Department of Law’s Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals for determination if lethal force was warranted.
