Lesil McGuire Announces Candidacy For Lieutenant Governor

Anchorage Republican Lesil McGuire announced her candidacy for Lieutenant Governor for the 2014 election on Wednesday.

This past legislative session, she represented South Anchorage in the state Senate. But as current Lieutenant Governor Mead Treadwell began exploring a campaign for the U.S. Senate, she started thinking about running to be his replacement.

“Last year, I started really contemplating whether or not there was room for me, and that’s always the question, because there are a lot of really good leaders in the state, and I’m certainly not the kind of person that thinks that I need to put my name in if there’s somebody there that’s doing a great job,” McGuire said.

Treadwell is expected to finalize his plans for the 2014 election later this month.

McGuire says she decided she wanted to run soon after the session ended, but needed to wait on the official OK from her Senate leadership group.

The group gave her the green light about two and a half weeks ago.

McGuire is the only candidate so far to officially declare their candidacy for Lieutenant Governor.

Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan has also filed a letter of intent to run for state-wide office, but which office he will run for remains unclear.
