Grand jury indicts man in death at Anchorage jail

An Anchorage grand jury has indicted a man suspected of killing a fellow prisoner at the Anchorage Correctional Center.

Alaska State Troopers say 20-year-old James Clinton was indicted on three counts including first-degree murder in the death of 53-year-old Mark Canul.

A corrections officer found Canul unconscious at about 1:30 p.m. Dec. 11 during a routine security check of inmates.

Responders administered CPR and Canul was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Trooper investigators concluded that Clinton assaulted Canul.

The grand jury also indicted Clinton on two counts of second-degree murder.

Clinton is represented by the public defender’s office, which routinely does not comment on open cases.
