Alaska Native veterans to receive federal housing assistance

Three Alaska Native organizations are receiving federal funds to provide permanent housing to Native veterans at risk of homelessness.

The funds totaling slightly more than $1 million are being distributed among the Cook Inlet, Tlingit-Haida and Association of Village Council Presidents’ housing authorities. The grants were awarded Friday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The money is among $5.9 million in grants distributed by the two agencies to 26 tribes or tribal housing authorities nationwide to help 500 Native American veterans.

In Alaska, the grants will provide assistance to 20 veterans from each of the three tribal entities selected, for a total of 60 veterans.
