Perseverance’s “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and… Spike!”

It’s a tale told by one of America’s most respected yet unorthodox playwrights, Christopher Durang and Perseverance Theatre of Juneau is bringing it to Anchorage to start off their 2014-15 season. The 2013 Tony Award winning play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is Durang’s latest work and actors Patricia Hull and Ben Brown visit the studio to talk about the play, their characters and how they have approached their parts.

Valley Performing Arts presents Anastasia

More of a “who is it?” than a “who dun it” Guy Bolton’s English translation of Marcelle Maurette’s drama Anastasia will intrigue both history buffs as well as drama aficionados. Director (and history teacher) Grant Olson is having a blast making sure everything is historically accurate along with triple threat Shellie Riggan (actor, property mistress and hair designer). Join Grant and Shellie as they give us a backstage and history tour into Valley Performing Arts‘ latest offering opening September 5th and running until the 28th.

Cyrano’s Theater Company starts its new season with “4000 Miles,” a story about a young man’s relationship with his grandmother Vera, jokingly dubbed the “token old lady” by actor Linda Benson. Director Krista Schwarting and actor Linda Benson join us in studio to talk more on “4000 Miles.”

ACT’s “I Hate Hamlet”

UAA’s season is a facade

The University of Alaska Anchorage Department of Theatre and Dance is presenting a season that pays homage to Shakespeare but it’s all (or mostly) a facade. Literally. Tune into Stage Talk this week to join guests Daniel Carlgren, David Edgecombe and Chris Evans as they reveal their upcoming line-up that include zombies, a world gone crazy and cross-dressing lovers. You can “try to remember” but you’ll still have some Doubt.

They’ve been singing for thirty-three years and dancing for almost that long and now The Music Machine comes to Stage Talk. Hear co-founder Janet Carr-Campbell sing the praises of all those she has worked with over the years and listen to ten-year old singer and dancer phenom Abby Sorum talk about what she loves most about performing. The Music Machine’s annual musical revue starring sixty-five children aged six to eighteen opens July 30th and runs through August 2nd at the Performing Arts Center’s Discovery Theatre.

Let’s roast a little Brunhilde at Das Barbecu

Summertime is the perfect time for a…barbecu? It is if it is a Texas take-off of one of Richard Wagner’s classic opera’s, Der Ring des Nibelungen called Das Barbecu. Seems the good folks who like opera also like to have a little fun and so Jim Luigs and Scott Warrender decided to write a musical that features characters from Wagner’s classic tale but set in Texas. Confusing? Then listen this week to Stage Talk as director Regina MacDonald and actor Tiffany Chancey stop by to talk about Cyrano’s Theatre Company’s latest offering which opens July 17th and runs through August 24th.

Takin’ the summer road trip to Talkeetna

There’s a lot of Theatre going on just up the road a piece in Talkeetna this summer. Nick Condon, Denali Arts Council’s Director of Drama, has two shows coming up: the musical Schoolhouse Rock that features favorite songs like “Conjunction Junction” and “I’m Just a Bill” and an improv show called appropriately enough, IditaprovSchoolhouse Rock runs July 25, 26 and 27 at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar.

Winnie-The-Pooh Comes to the Alaska Fine Arts Academy in Eagle River

A. A. Milne’s endearing and enduring characters Kanga, Eeyore, Piglet and Rabbit among others come to life in the Alaska Fine Arts Academy’s production of Kristin Sergel’s stage adaptation of Winnie-the-Pooh. AFAA’s Executive Director Holly Linsay along with Co-Director Holly Tarkov and actor Chris Cox come on Stage Talk this week to let Jean and Steve in on all the fun. Winnie-the-Pooh opens in Eagle River on July 11th and runs through the 26th.

An Evening of Storytelling with Alan Rachins for Cyrano’s

Cyrano’s Theater Company brings two L.A. performers to Anchorage for an evening of storytelling and songs. Join host Jean Paal and guests, actor Alan Rachins and composer Shelly Markham, on Stage Talk for a sneak peek at what Rachins and Markham will talk about at tonight’s benefit for Cyrano’s. Rachins is best know for his role as Dharma’s wacky dad on the hit TV sitcom “Dharma and Gregg.” He also starred in “LA Law.” Markham is a Broadway composer and will be playing piano tunes during the Cyrano’s benefit. The event happens June 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.
