KSKA Programs

KSKA airs news, health, science, arts, entertainment, music and local programs from a variety of sources everyday. Some programs we produce in Anchorage in our own studios, while we pick up others from National Public Radio (NPR), the Alaska Public Radio Network (APRN), Public Radio International (PRI), American Public Media (APM), the BBC and lots of independent producers.

1on1 introduces listeners and viewers to the trendsetters who are shaping the scene in Southcentral Alaska. Host Charles Wohlforth shares a cup of coffee with the area’s most colorful characters and personalities and talks with them about their personal stories, their roles in town, and their visions for things to come in our community. We will hear from the men and women who are making things happen in the arts, business, sports, music, nightlife, outdoors, and neighborhoods. Listen Thursdays at 1:00 pm on KSKA.

A Closer Look (KSKA)
A Closer Look is a half hour program that gives us the opportunity to explore beyond our news stories and offer you additional insights into the events and people helping shape our community. Listen to expanded interviews and in-depth coverage from recently broadcast news stories periodically on Monday afternoons at 1:00 pm.

Addressing Alaskans (KSKA)
Addressing Alaskans features public talks and community forums recorded at events happening all over Southcentral Alaska. Various community organizations, including the Alaska World Affairs Council, Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, World Trade Center of Alaska, Anchorage Museum and many more host local, national and global experts speaking on topics that matter to Alaskans.  Listen every Thursday at 2:00 pm repeating at 7:00 pm.

Hosted by one of Africa’s best-loved broadcast personalities — Georges Collinet — Afropop Worldwide is a radio program, a web site, a searchable database, an international musical archive, a team of researchers and a travel series to Africa and Latin America. Listen Sundays at 11:00 p.m.

Alaska Edition (KSKA)
Michael Carey hosts a weekly, half-hour news analysis talk show with local journalists. Listen Fridays at 2:00 p.m. Produced by KAKM public television, Alaska Edition rebroadcasts on Saturday evenings at 6:00 p.m.

Alaska Fisheries Report (KMXT)
Produced by public radio station KMXT in Kodiak — home of the largest fishing fleet in the Pacific Northwest, AFR is a 15-minute weekly review of news from Alaska’s vibrant fishing industry. Listen Fridays at 2:30 p.m.

Alaska Morning News (APRN)
Take a 5-minute spin through Alaska’s statewide headlines before heading out for the day. Listen weekday mornings at 7:06 and 8:06 during Morning Edition.

Alaska News Nightly (APRN)
ANN has been evening drive “appointment radio” for Alaskans for nearly 30 years. APRN and public radio reporters from across Alaska team up for this statewide half-hour news program, providing in-depth information on events in every corner of the state and from Washington, D.C. Alaska Radio Reader Rambler (KSKA)
Sandy Harper and Dick Reichman chat once a month with authors and artists about plays, books, theater and Alaska’s performance art culture. Listen the last Monday of each month at 1:00 p.m.

Algo Nuevo – Something New (KSKA)
Hosted by Anchorage’s Dave Luera, this new (2007) Latino music program brings Cumbia, Marangue, Salsa and other styles to KSKA’s airwaves each week. Show announcements are bilingual so Spanish and English speakers can enjoy this rich musical heritage together. Listen Sundays at 7:45 – 11:00 p.m.

All Things Considered (NPR)
Every afternoon some of the nation’s best reporting, commentary and analysis can be heard on this premier NPR news magazine. KSKA includes local news and weather alongside ATC’s national hosts Michele Norris, Melissa Block and Robert Siegel who bring you breaking news, in-depth analysis and features gathered from around the world. Listen weekday evenings from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

BBC World Service (BBC)
Listen to news from the BBC overnight and weekdays at 1:00 pm on KSKA. The rotating schedule includes programs such as, World Have Your Say, The World Today, Newshour, World Briefing and more.

Bioneers
“Bioneers” are social and scientific innovators from all walks of life who have peered into the heart of living systems to understand how nature operates, and to mimic “nature’s operating instructions” to serve human ends without harming the web of life. The program features interviews and presentations from the annual Bioneers Conference archives. Listen Thursdays at 8:30 p.m.

Bird Note
BirdNote shows are two-minute vignettes that incorporate the rich sounds of birds with stories that illustrate the interesting— and in some cases, truly amazing — abilities of birds. Hear BirdNote on KSKA, Saturdays and Sundays at 9:38 a.m. during Morning Edition on FM 91.1

Car Talk (NPR)
Tom and Ray Magliozzi — “Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers” — have been dispensing expert car advice and more on the Peabody Award-winning program for 20 years. Each week, they take listener calls and create an hour’s worth of automobile mayhem, interspersed with intelligent advice on car repair. Listen Saturdays at 11:00 a.m.

Conversations That Matter (KAKM / Alaska Community Foundation)
Often, the conversations most worth having are the hardest to tackle. In order to take the first steps towards a statewide dialogue around the most important issues facing Alaska today, the Alaska Community Foundation and KAKM Channel 7 TV have launched the Conversations that Matter program series.

Edicion Semanaria (Radio Bilingue)
Produced by Radio Bilingue, Edicion Semanaria is a 15-minute newscast in Spanish covering the week’s news in Spanish. Listen Sundays at 7:30 p.m.

Encounters (KCAW – Sitka)
Encounters is a seasonal weekly program exploring Alaska’s natural world. Recorded in the wild by award-winning nature writer and cultural anthropologist Richard Nelson, the 1999-2001 writer laureate of Alaska). Nelson describes what happens around him, including scientific information about the subject often mixed with Alaskan native teachings and perspectives from his own experience. Encounters typically airs about half the year starting in the fall. Listen Thursdays at 8:00 pm repeating Fridays at 1:00 p.m.

Fresh Air (NPR)
This weekday interview and features program is a fresh look at contemporary art, music, politics and history. The Peabody Award-winning Fresh Air brings newsworthy guests from worlds as diverse as literature and economics to be interviewed by a host — Terry Gross — who allows guests to shine. Here and Now (WBUR)
Here & Now is an hour-long daily spin through not only all the big news stories, but the stories behind the stories and some of the less-crucial but equally intriguing things happening in the world. Local guests discuss community issues and take listener calls during this LIVE call-in show. Hometown, Alaska features conversations with leaders and decision-makers in local and statewide government, social service agencies, educational institutions and cultural groups. Kids These Days!
Shana Sheehy, producer of Spirit of Youth radio series on KSKA; Jessica Cochran, senior producer of APRN’s AK; and Sarah Gonzales join forces to connect Alaskans raising children in this geographically enormous state. Listeners are invited to participate in this call-in show on issues facing Alaska’s kids from infancy to young adulthood. Kids Theses Days makes it public radio debut on KSKA Tuesday August 30, 2010 as part of the all-Alaska block weekdays at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

Line One: Your Health Connection (KSKA)
Host Dr. Thad Woodard and guests discuss a variety of health-related topics during this LIVE call-in show. Line One features local physicians and national subject experts from the fields of nutrition, childcare, pharmacology, surgery, psychology and more. Callers can talk one-on-one with each week’s guests and even participate online. Listen Mondays at 2:00 p.m. for the live broadcast or catch the rebroadcast at 7:00 p.m.

Morning Edition (NPR)
Morning Edition draws public radio’s largest audience with its fresh, incisive roundup of the top stories from around the planet. During the Morning Edition block KSKA includes local news and APRN’s morning reports to give you the latest updates from local, state, national and international reporters, analysts and commentators. Listen weekdays starting at 1:00 a.m. local time. The main Morning Edition broadcast for KSKA starts at 5:00 a.m. with local and state news updates included in the 5:00 – 9:00 a.m. block.

Mountain Stage (WVPB)
Mountain Stage is a weekly two-hour live music show produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and features some of the world’s greatest artists in an intimate and relaxed atmosphere with a live-broadcast edge. It’s a great blend of studio quality with live performance before a theater audience. Each program features four or five guests. Listen Sundays at 2:00 p.m.

National Native News
A regular, timely and balanced source of news about Native American and Alaska Native communities, including social, economic and cultural issues nationwide.

Night Music (KSKA)
This program features classic jazz as well as avant-garde jazz. Kirk Waldaus hosts every other week with Connie G from the KSKA studios in Anchorage. Listen Saturdays at 8:00 p.m.

On the Media (NPR / WNYC)
Explore how the media “sausage” is made and examine threats to the freedom of information and expression in America and abroad. While maintaining the civility and fairness that are the hallmarks of public radio, OTM tackles sticky issues with a frankness and transparency that has built trust with listeners and led to more than a tripling of its audience in five years. A Prairie Home Companion (APM)
PHC is one of the most popular entertainment programs on public radio. Host, author and radio personality Garrison Keillor is the mastermind behind this weekly 2-hour live variety show featuring comedy, music, storytelling and “the news from Lake Wobegone.” Listen LIVE Saturdays at 2:00 p.m.; repeats Sundays at 10:00 a.m.

Putumayo World Music Hour
The Putumayo World Music Hour is an internationally-syndicated radio show taking listeners on a weekly journey through the music of many different cultures. Playlists include well-known names like Bob Marley, Sting, Loreena McKennitt and Santana along with exceptional, underexposed international artists. Listen Fridays at 7:00 p.m.

Radio Lab (WNYC)
Radiolab is a show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and human experience. The limited series currently broadcast on KSKA will continue through August 2012. Listen Saturdays at 1:00 pm on KSKA. Podcast available

Rock Island Line (KSKA)
The Rock Island Line is an occasional program of “classic folk” and folk-inspired music from what the hosts consider the Golden Age of Folk Music. Hosts Steve Grabacki and Marianne Kerr feature artists such as the Kingston Trio, Peter Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and many others.Watch the KSKA schedule for Rock Island Line, substituting for Traveling Music and Something Different Sundays at 12:00 pm.

Snap Judgment (NPR)
Snap Judgment has a raw, intimate, and musical brand of storytelling that dares listeners to see a sliver of the world through the eyes of another. Snap Judgment host Glynn Washington takes listeners on a narrative journey – leaping from one person’s frying pan into another person’s fire. Deejay-driven musical delivery, paired with lush sound design, drops listeners into the very heart of what matters. Soul to Soul (KSKA)
Hosts Marvell and Sherry Johnson play contemporary urban music as well as classic soul, taking dedications in “The Love Zone.” Soul to Soul has been a volunteer music program on KSKA since 1978. Listen Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m.

Soundprint
Soundprint is a weekly collection of long-form non-fiction works by outstanding producers and new voices in public radio. Each program explores one subject in depth, from the impact of AIDS in Haiti to civil rights issues in Mississippi. Soundprint exploits the richly imaginative, personal medium of radio. Spirit of Youth
Produced by Shana Sheehy right here in Alaska, Spirit of Youth is a weekly 2-minute story of youth in our community making a difference and finding their place in the world.

Stage Talk (KSKA)
Theater critics  Mark Muro and Jean Paal take listeners backstage to chat with actors, directors, playwrights and technical artists about the theater scene in Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley. Included in each weekly conversation is a calendar of the best live performances and stage events in Southcentral Alaska. Listen Fridays at 2:45 p.m.
