Sonya Wellman
Director of Special Events
Sonya holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations from the University of Oregon. She started out of college at the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau, which was followed by a six-year stint as the Promotions & Marketing Director for The World Famous Chilkoot Charlie’s, the ninth largest nightclub in the United States. Sonya then moved to Washington in 2006 where she was Executive Director for the United Way of Grays Harbor in Aberdeen, and Donor and Community Relations Manager for Northwest Youth Services in Bellingham. When she returned to her hometown in 2010, she worked for the Alaska Conservation Alliance and its sister organization, Alaska Conservation Voters, as Development Director.
Sonya’s heart has always belonged to special events, and it has been consistently her favorite part of working in the non-profit world. Even when she has volunteered her time to non-profit organizations, it usually has been in the form of an event, such as the Covenant House Fire & Ice Ball and the annual auction for the Alaska Travel Industry Association.
Sonya has been a lifelong supporter of public radio and public television. In fact, her parents didn’t even have cable until about a year ago, so public television was a mainstay staple in their household when Sonya was growing up. When the opportunity came to actually work for Alaska Public Media in special events, she jumped at the chance!
