Chief Officer, Marketing & Development
Torrie Allen is the chief officer of development and marketing at Alaska Public Media. In this position, he is accountable for the development and execution of the company’s financial growth strategies and leading communications activities. Recently, he spearheaded the company’s successful statewide rebranding from Alaska Public Telecommunications Inc. to Alaska Public Media, an effort that aligned its various TV, radio and digital brands and strengthened its stature as one of North America’s most respected public media organizations.
Previously, as the first African-American to lead a professional opera company in the American Circumpolar North, Allen garnered acclaim for producing classic European opera, new North American opera, and American musical theater. In 2012, the Paul G. Allen Foundation recognized him for turning Anchorage Opera into a creative and resourceful “Bright Spot” in the Pacific Northwest. In 2011, he was among 100 top executive arts leaders worldwide chosen by National Arts Strategies to participate in its Chief Executive Program, a two-year initiative designed to re-imagine what cultural institutions will be and how they can contribute to civil society.
Before moving to Alaska, Allen was director of the National Patrons Council at Americans for the Arts in Washington, D.C. and New York City.
Allen recently served as a grants review panelist for the Wallace Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. He chaired the Alaska World Affairs Council program committee and co-founded the undergraduate opera apprentice program at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Additionally, he has provided board, advisory council, task force and committee service for numerous other organizations including Americans for the Arts, Alaska State Council on the Arts, Russian Chamber Chorus of New York, Oratorio Society of New York, Anchorage Economic Development Corporation and the Anchorage Symphony.
Prior to his careers in arts and broadcast media management, Allen spent a decade as a professional opera and concert singer appearing at renowned venues worldwide from Carnegie Hall in New York City to the Rudolfinum in Prague, Czech Republic. He continues to perform and coach emerging singers.
Allen holds degrees from UCLA and the Boston Conservatory. He has chief executive training certifications from Harvard Business School, Ross School of Business at University of Michigan and the RGK Center for Philanthropy Contact:
