Chickaloon Tribe Plans Protest Against Coal Exploration

Ellen Lockyer, APRN – Anchorage

The Chickaloon Tribe plans a demonstration Thursday against coal exploration in the tribe’s traditional use area. Angela Wade is the environmental program director for the Chickaloon Tribe. She says Usibelli Coal is in the initial stages of building an access road to coal deposits in the vicinity.

Usibelli Coal plans to access coal in the Wishbone Hill coal lease area near Palmer. Wade says the road to the coal will adversely impact Moose Creek, a culturally significant traditional fishing site. The Chickaloon Village Traditional Council has spent many years and more than a million dollars to restore salmon habitat and salmon runs in Moose Creek.
