Whale Killed by Boat in Southeast

Steve Heimel, APRN – Anchorage

Another dead whale was found floating in Southeast waters last week and authorities say it was killed by a boat.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says that whale strikes appear to be on the rise, about half of them from private vessels and half from commercial ones.

The latest dead whale was a Humpback – a male about 30 feet long.  Its carcass was found floating near Tenakee Springs last Thursday morning.  Volunteers were able to tow it to a beach where a necropsy could be done.
