Report Recommends Increasing Federal Oversight of Offshore Drilling

An Interior Department report recommends beefing up federal oversight of offshore oil and gas drilling.

Already the Minerals Management Service has been dismantled, and replaced by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. The new agency’s head, Michael Bromwich, says they are already at work on the Oversight Board’s recommendations.

The report recommends real-time monitoring of drilling activities, more inspectors, better training, and a better chain of command.
