North Star Borough Will Use Grant to Help Develop Biomass Industry

Dan Bross, KUAC – Fairbanks

The Fairbanks North Star Borough will use a federal grant to help develop the local biomass industry. The $50,000 award will pay for borough time and hiring a consultant to work with local people on the potential and obstacles to biomass harvest and processing for energy. Fairbanks is already home to the state’s first large scale wood pellet manufacturing facility and a local biomass power plant is poised to come on line. Borough Economic Development Specialist Kathryn Dodge says the grant will help the industry cluster continue to grow.
