Medivac Plane Crashes Near Atqasuk

Monday morning at about 2:30 a medivac plane crashed as it was on approach to land at the North Slope Borough village of Atqasuk.

North Slope Borough Police Department Chief Leon Boyea says the Beechcraft King Air 200 was flying to Atqasuk on a medevac mission when it when down about seven miles from the village.

The airplane was operated by North Slope Borough Search and Rescue.

Borough spokesman David Harding says the plane had a crew of three, two of whom received treatment at the Barrow hospital and were then  released.

North Slope officials say icing is the suspected cause.

Federal Aviation officials will begin their investigation into the crash today.
