APD releases ID of man killed by car in midtown

The Anchorage Police Department has released the name of the person killed when walking in midtown on Wednesday at 1:30 pm. According to the APD press release, 51-year-old Russell Place was “walking in the roadway” on the New Seward Highway near E. Benson when he was stuck by a silver SUV that was traveling northbound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The event is still under investigation and no charges or citations have been issued.

Place is the second pedestrian to be struck and killed by a vehicle in Anchorage this year. The first happened on Muldoon in January. Preliminary Department of Transportation data shows 14 pedestrians were killed by vehicles in the state in 2014.
