Mat-Su Borough, fire department spat over on-duty rules

The Mat-Su Borough and the Talkeetna Fire Department are working to clear up confusion about when responders are on duty.

KTUU-TV reports that tension between the two organizations over when and how responders can act at a scene have been mounting for a while, but over the weekend a firefighter was terminated due to the ongoing conflict about rules.

Eric Chappel stopped to assist with an overturned trailer when he was off the clock after hearing about it on the radio in his personal vehicle. However Borough officials told Chappel not to respond to the call. Chappel was terminated from the Talkeetna Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department by the Mat-Su Borough after the incident.

Mat-Su Borough Emergency Services director Bill Gamble says both the fire department and the borough met Saturday to try to work out the problems.
