The Archdiocese of Anchorage says Hurley died at his Anchorage home Sunday evening, two days before his 89th birthday. Anchorage funeral arrangements are pending.

Hurley moved to Alaska in 1970, when he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Juneau Diocese. He was appointed as archbishop of Anchorage in 1976, retiring from that role in 2001.

2010, the long-retired Hurley presided over the funeral of former Alaska Gov. Walter J. Hickel. Several months later, he presided over the funeral of former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, who died in a plane crash.
