State Budget Cuts Squeeze Wildland Firefighters

Firefighting efforts are winding down on two wildfires in Southwest Alaska. The state's firefighting assets that responded to these fires were based out of McGrath, the station that covers the nearly 90 million acres of Southwest Alaska. Next month McGrath will lose the majority of its firefighting staff due to state budget cuts. Download Audio:

Right now the tundra and forests of Bristol Bay are exploding with flora. While many foragers have already supped on fiddlehead ferns and are looking forward to wild berry picking, some may overlook the traditional medicinal uses of many Alaskan plants. Two Dillingham women set out to capture the benefits of these native plants in a line of homemade bath products – they call it “Tundra Love.” Download Audio:

Chemical tags in ear bones reveal Chinooks’ life histories

New research on the Nushagak River – one of the largest Chinook salmon runs in the world – used chemical tags in a fish’s ear bones to tell where it was born and raised. Sean Brennan is a post-doc at the University of Washington’s School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences. He and his team hope the study research will help managers better understand how their fisheries work. Download Audio:
