Coast Guard Shows Off New Station Juneau Response Boat
The U.S. Coast Guard are getting new response boats. The vessels are 45 feet long aluminum hulled, sporting twin diesel engines with water jet propulsion. Station Juneau recently got one of the new boats. Another is scheduled to arrive next month.
Ferry Returns to Service
The Alaska state ferry Fairweather will return to service this weekend. Alaska Marine Highway Director Mike Neussel says repairs have been completed on the water jet that sprung a leak in late August.

Conservative Political Action Conference Cruise Picketed over Labor Dispute
Unions chose to picket the a cruise ship full of well-known conservatives when it docked in Juneau yesterday. The Westerdam is carrying Donald Rumsfeld, Grover Norquist, Ralph Reed and other political conservatives and their fans through Alaska waters.
Fast Ferry Fairweather Out Until September
The fast ferry Fairweather will be out of service until early September. The ship has been tied up in Juneau since a small oil leak was discovered Thursday evening in one of its four water jets, which power the ship.
Parts of Juneau Under Flood Warning
Heavy rains continue to hit Southeast, and parts of Juneau in the Mendenhall Valley are under a flood warning Tuesday. Petersburg already had a slide.
Mine Drilling OK’d in Two Roadless Areas
Tuesday, the Forest Service OK’d exploratory drilling at two Southeast Alaska mine sites.
The work will be done in roadless areas of the Tongass National Forest. That means they needed approval from agency Chief Tom Tidwell.
State Gets Support in its Fight Against Roadless Rule
The Juneau Chamber of Commerce, First Things First Alaska Foundation and 12 other Southeast businesses and organizations will join in the state’s lawsuit against a federal rule that prevents road construction in certain areas of the Tongass National Forest.
Tour Boat Passenger Injured by Calving Glacier
A 60-year-old woman suffered a broken leg last Thursday when the tour boat she was on got too close to a calving glacier in Tracy Arm.
A video posted on the website LiveLeak.com on Sunday shows a large chunk of the glacier break off and send waves and ice flying toward the vessel.
Effort to Un-Stall Juneau Road Fails
The state's latest move to un-stall the Juneau road has failed. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals refused to look again at its ruling requiring more consideration of the ferry system. Citizens Pro Road Chairman Dick Knapp is already saying the state ought to appeal.

A hiker was found dead Tuesday near Juneau. James Reese, 42, was reported missing on Monday. His vehicle was found at the Herbert Glacier Trail trailhead and body was found near the Herbert River.

Crews Recover Bodies From Douglas Island Crash
Weather cleared enough Friday evening for a helicopter to reach the site of a plane wreck on Douglas Island and remove two bodies. Efforts continue to recover the crash debris.
