Riding Alaska’s Bore Tide
Summer may be officially over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the memories. Local filmmaker Adam Holzer sent us this great video of a truly Alaskan surfing expedition. Adam says:
My friend Kyle Eckstrom from Hawaii was in town for a wedding and during a discussion over coffee, I jokingly asked him if he wanted to surf the bore tide that day (he is a very experienced surfer). Kyle had no clue what it was and I had never done it, but he seemed enthralled with the idea, so we ran with it.
I made a couple phone calls and did some research, only to find out that this particular day was the second best bore tide day for the month. We gathered borrowed surf gear, I grabbed my camera and cameraman (Landis Tanaka), and we hit the Seward Highway. We really had no clue what we were doing, but we just video journaled the entire day. Come to find out that of the 7-8 others that tried to catch the wave, Kyle Eckstrom was the only success. I have the GoPro helmet cam documentation, he rode that wave for 14 minutes and 26 seconds!
