Galena school board president ousted

Galena School Board President Kim Kopp has been recalled.

102 votes were cast in favor of recalling Kopp during Tuesday’s election, compared to 67 saying no to the recall.

26 questioned and absentee ballots remain to be counted, but that should not be enough to sway the outcome.

The results are unofficial until the final votes are tallied and the results are certified later this month.

Former Galena School Board member Jenny Bryant and other recall sponsors accused Kopp of incompetence and being dismissive of community input. Kopp rejected the accusations as vague and inaccurate.

Voter turnout was close to 73 percent in the Yukon River community’s first-ever recall election.

The remaining four members of the Galena City School District Board of Education will get to appoint a replacement to serve the remaining year on Kopp’s term.
