Crude oil leak in Cook Inlet halted successfully; spill volume still unknown

State regulators on Monday said a leak from a crude oil pipeline in Cook Inlet was halted successfully.

Per-student funding cuts and online teaching on the table in Legislature

Alaska schools would see a $69 million dollar cut in the amount of money the state provides based on the number of students each school district serves, called the Base Student Allocation, under the budget proposed by the Senate Finance Committee. The Base Student Allocation would drop roughly 300 dollars per student, from the current level just below 6000 dollars.

Child hospitalized after snow slides off roof and buries her

A child is hospitalized after being buried by snow sliding off a roof in North Pole. Alaska State Troopers report that the 4-year-old girl’s grandmother called Troopers after 1 p.m. Saturday saying the family was searching for the child after a large amount of snow broke free from a metal roof at the their residence.

Smokejumpers prepare for wildfire season with practice jumps

Preparation for wildfire season is underway. Alaska Fire Service spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said smokejumpers have been training and will commence practice jumps this week in the Fairbanks North Pole area, something she said will go on despite this year’s hefty snowpack.

Sitka’s electric rates to change seasonally

The City of Sitka is facing a tough balancing act, between meeting their debt service on the Blue Lake Dam project and keeping rates reasonable for low-income Sitkans. Some are struggling to pay their electric bill. To address this, the Sitka Assembly decided to implement a seasonal rate structure.
